The inspiration for this block print-inspired design came easily to me because I have the best memories of my travels to Japan for many years. During my 6-month stay in Kyoto, I was able to sample many examples of Kyoyasai (vegetables of the Kyoto region), the traditional culture and, for instance, the iconic design staples. I will cherish the memories always. When I lived in Kyoto, I hired a tiny apartment in ‘Kamigyō-ku’. During that time, I had the opportunity to see cherry and plum blossoms all over Kyoto. I sampled different kinds of sake (remember to drink it cold in summer and warm in the winter!). The fruits were also amazing. I ate persimmon for the first time and regularly took some onigiri with me on the train. Sometimes, I visited a tea house to drink hot or cold sencha and watch all the amazing gardens with koi carp in the pond. In autumn, the Acer (Maple) and Ginkgo trees show their fabulous colours. In Japanese, Ginkgo is actually called Ginnan, and grilled Ginnan nuts are so good! From the calm of a tea house garden to the busy shopping streets of Kyoto, I would pass all these red lanterns with an iconic plover bird painted on them. In Japanese, these birds are called chi-dori. It is one of the most iconic images from Japan, as well as the ‘Usagi’, which means bunny. I was born in the year of the bunny, so that is maybe why I like it so much. Kyoto, I miss you almost every day. I will always come back.?
